Real Betis star Borja Iglesias has vowed never to play for Spain again
Iglesias has decided to boycott the national team after the Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales, decided not to step aside.
The FA chief was expected to resign from the position on Friday but he decided otherwise, saying he has achieved a lot to step aside.
Iglesias has been a mainstay for his club netting 50 goals for the European side in four seasons.
Iglesias said he will not play his national colours once again until Luis Rubiales leaves the position.
Rubiales action at the end of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand has prompted a lot of reactions.
Many organisations and individuals have called for Rubiales resignation after he grabbed and forcefully kissed Spanish forward, Jenni Hermoso during the medal presentation after Spain’s win over England last Sunday.
However, the 46-year-old official declined to step down from his post.
During a meeting of the federation’s general assembly, Rubiales stated, “Do you think this is so serious that I should go, after the best management in the history of Spanish football? Let me tell you: I’m not going to resign.”
Iglesias, while reacting to Rubiales’ attitude, said,
“I am sad and disappointed. As a footballer and as a person I don’t feel represented by what happened today in the [the Spanish FA headquarters].
“Wearing the Spanish National Team shirt is one of the greatest things that has happened to me in my career.
“I don’t know if at some point I will be an option again, but I have made the decision not to return to the National Team until things change and this type of act does not go unpunished.”
