Xavi, the manager of Barcelona, has suggested that Frenkie de Jong will play centre-back if he does not sign with Manchester United this summer.
The 25-year-old continues to be linked with a transfer to Old Trafford, and new manager Erik ten Hag views him as a transfer priority.
The clubs have agreed on a transfer fee of €75 million, but de Jong refuses to leave Barcelona because the club still owes him €17 million for wages deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
If he stays at Camp Nou, there is no assurance he will play in his preferred midfield position.
Franck Kessie signed as a free agent earlier in the window, while Pedri and Gavi continue to develop.
The Netherlands international’s two preseason appearances have been as a substitute defender, and Xavi believes he possesses all the necessary skills to play at the back.
