Lisandro Martinez will be moving from Ajax to Manchester United, according to a confirmed agreement, pending the outcome of a medical exam and the negotiation of personal terms.
United will pay €57.37m (£48.8m) for the 24-year-old, which could rise to €67.37m (£57.4m) with add-ons, according to the Dutch giants.
After Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen, the Argentine is set to become the third signing of the Erik ten Hag era, with United identifying the utility man as their priority defensive target some time ago.
Martinez was also heavily linked with Arsenal this summer, however, he turned down their advances in order to reunite with former Ajax manager Ten Hag.
“Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Argentine international defender Lisandro Martinez, subject to medical, to player terms being finalised, and to UK visa requirements.” said a club statement.
Ajax also confirmed the fee in a statement: “Ajax and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the transfer of Lisandro Martínez,” it read.
“The transfer is still subject to a medical examination and the player’s contractual agreement with both clubs. The defender’s contract with Ajax expires on June 30, 2025. Ajax and the English club agreed on a fee of €57.37 million. Variables can raise this figure to € 67.37 million.”
Martinez, like fellow newcomer Eriksen, will not join Manchester United’s touring squad in Australia once the deal is completed. The club decided that the lengthy travel time was not worth it for a few training sessions and a game against Crystal Palace on Tuesday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
United is eager to make more signings before the season begins next month. According to 90min, they are still working on a deal to bring Frenkie de Jong, another former Ajax player, to the club.
