German goalkeeper Loris Karius has been hired by Newcastle United on a short-term deal that expires in January.
Extending the contract until the end of the season for the 29-year-old after he left Liverpool in the summer is an option.
After backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow injured his ankle, Karius was brought in.
“I felt it was the right project for me and I’m excited to work with the coaches and my new team-mates,” he said.
While Nick Pope joined from Burnley, Martin Dubravka, a fellow goalkeeper for Newcastle, left for Manchester United during the summer.
“He [Karius] is a very good keeper with Premier League and European experience,” said boss Eddie Howe.
“He will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.”
Karius was a member of the Liverpool team that lost to Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final, and he was given the blame for two of the three goals despite later learning he had suffered a concussion.
Before leaving the Reds, he later spent time on loan at Union Berlin and Besiktas.
“I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision,” said Karius, who had joined Liverpool from Mainz 05 in 2016.
“Newcastle have a great coach and play really attractive football.”
