Lionel Messi has informed Paris Saint-Germain that he will not discuss a new contract with the club until after the 2022 World Cup.
PSG has recently indicated a desire to extend his current contract, which expires in 2023, at least for another year until 2024.
The French club’s initial offer to Messi in 2021, while he was still a Barcelona player, was either a three-year contract or two years with a one-year option. It turned out to be two years.
PSG want to build their new era under Christophe Galtier around getting the most out of Messi, who has committed to staying at least until the end of his current contract.
However, when his contract expires next summer, Messi is expected to have a number of options, including in Major League Soccer.
Barcelona has also openly discussed Messi’s potential return when the club’s financial situation improves.
Messi wants to focus on starting the season well with PSG and then trying to win the World Cup with Argentina, with the November-December tournament in Qatar likely being his last chance.
