Jose Mourinho has emerged as a surprise candidate to succeed Mauricio Pochettino as manager of PSG, according to reports.
Despite winning Ligue 1 last season, Pochettino is expected to be fired in the coming days.
PSG executives were dissatisfied with the team’s performance in the Champions League, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Real Madrid.
Leonardo, the club’s sporting director, has already been fired.
Luis Campos will take over for the Brazilian, and Pochettino will be looking for a new job soon.
Zinedine Zidane, who has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid at the end of the 2020/21 season, has long been considered the frontrunner to replace Pochettino.
However, PSG fears that the former France international is holding out for a spot on the national team, which could become available after the 2022 World Cup.
As a result, the French giants are looking for replacements for Zidane, and Mourinho could be one of them.
According to the Daily Telegraph, PSG were impressed by the Portuguese’s work at Roma last season.
Despite finishing sixth in Serie A, Roma won the inaugural Europa Conference League by defeating Feyenoord in the final.
That was Mourinho’s fifth European title as a manager, and it is his track record on the continent that most appeals to PSG, who have yet to win the Champions League.
Campos worked with Mourinho at Real Madrid as a scout.
It is unclear whether Kylian Mbappe will have a direct say in who PSG appoints, but the France international has been given more power at the club after signing a three-year contract last month.
Mbappe was expected to join Real Madrid this summer, but he instead committed his immediate future to PSG.
