Rafael Nadal continued his dominance on clay by winning the French Open for the 14th time.
At Roland Garros, the Spaniard thrashed first-time finalist Casper Ruud 6-3 6-3 6-0.
Nadal, who is 36 years old and suffering from a chronic foot problem, has been linked to retirement rumors.
But he brushed aside Norwegian eighth seed Ruud to win his 22nd grand slam, moving him two points ahead of great rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in the all-time male rankings.
As expected, Nadal’s quarter-final victory over outgoing champion Djokovic proved to be the most difficult obstacle on his way to the ‘decimocuarto.’
Ruud, on the other hand, was a walk in the park in the Paris sunshine, 17 years after the Spaniard won his first title here.
Because of Nadal’s longevity, he is now frequently facing players who idolized him as a kid.
Ruud, 23, is one of them, having witnessed Nadal’s eighth title victory over David Ferrer in 2013.
The Norwegian also attended Nadal’s academy in Majorca, where he played practice sets with his idol on a regular basis.
Although the first set had all the intensity of a knock-about in the Spanish sun, it was their first competitive match.
The underdog received a rude awakening when he was broken right away, and while Nadal let him off the hook with a sloppy service game, the first set was quickly won.
In the second, a double fault gave Ruud a break to love for a 3-1 lead, but he was unable to extend the lead as Nadal drew on his reserves to hit straight back.
