Tammy Abraham had a phenomenal first league season in Italy, and he capped it off by breaking a record for an English player in Serie A with Roma’s victory over Torino.
Abraham left the Premier League and moved to Serie A in the summer of 2017, when he made the move from Chelsea to join Jose Mourinho’s side in a deal rumored to be worth £34 million. Abraham’s previous club was in the Premier League.
Abraham was not even included in the squad that competed in the Champions League final after his position in the starting lineup was removed by Thomas Tuchel after he took over as manager from Frank Lampard in January 2021.
This season, however, he has demonstrated that he made the right decision to join Roma, when he could have moved to Arsenal, while his replacement, Romelu Lukaku, has hardly pulled up in trees back in west London.
On Friday, Roma finished off their season with a 3-0 victory over Torino. This result ensured that Roma would finish in the top six of the league and earn a spot in the Europa League for the upcoming season.
Abraham scored twice in the victory, and his second goal, which was scored from the penalty spot, brought his goal tally to 17, breaking the record for the most goals scored in a single Serie A season by an Englishman. Abraham’s goals also helped the team to win.
Gerry Hitchens set the previous record in 1962 when he scored 16 goals for Inter Milan. Since then, players such as Luther Blissett, Jay Bothroyd, Trevor Francis, David Platt, and Mark Hateley have not been able to surpass his total.
On top of that, only Rodolfo Volk has scored more goals in a debut season in Serie A with Roma. Volk scored 21 goals in the 1929/30 season, which was Volk’s first season with Roma.
After the game, the 24-year-old player expressed his love for the club by saying, “I fell in love with this club on the first day and I’m always going to help the team as much as possible with my goals and assists.” The player’s comments came in response to the fact that he had just started playing for the club.
“It’s been a good year for me. I’d like to build on it and hopefully we can finish with a trophy and this will be the perfect year.”
Abraham, who does have a buy back clause on his contract, was asked about his future with the Giallorossi, saying, “I love this club. They’ve given me the opportunity to show myself and my heart is here.
“We’ll see what the future holds but my heart is here.”
