Today in history, KemiFilani joins the rest of the Sports world to remember the Bradford fire disaster which took place on 11th May 1985, and tragically claimed the lives of 56 football lovers; 54 Bradford City fans and 2 Lincoln City fans.
The fire broke out at the stadium, which was famous for its archaic architecture and facilities, including the wooden roof of the main stand, during the season’s last game, which saw Bradford City presented with the Third Division title trophy before the game.
However, at roughly 3.40 p.m., a minor fire broke out in the main stand, as television analyst John Helm memorably pointed out.
The fire quickly grew into a raging inferno that devoured the whole stand. Helm’s statements were followed by horrific events in less than four minutes.
Fans stormed the ground in an attempt to flee, while others in the stands attempted to smash down the exit doors in order to escape.
Many others were tragically burned to death at the turnstile gates, which had also been locked after the contest had began.
37 years on the memory still remains fresh in the football scene, nobody should ever go to a football match and not return home. They are gone but not forgotten!
