Oliver Kahn says that Bayern Munich will not attempt to replace Manuel Neuer by acquiring Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Following Germany’s exit from Qatar 2022, the Bundesliga champions are expected to be without their first-choice goalkeeper due to a leg injury he sustained while on vacation.
It is unclear whether Bayern will stick with Sven Ulreich as his backup or look further afield now that Neuer is out for the season.
Livakovic, a keeper for Dinamo Zagreb, has had a standout World Cup with Croatia thus far and was instrumental in their victory over Brazil in the penalty shootout, but Kahn claims they won’t be considering him as a replacement.
“The man who stopped Brazil will always be a hero to me,” Kahn said. “Livakovic is worthy of praise. Such a goalkeeper must play at a top club.
“I have no doubt that this will be the case in the new season, but at the same time, he is not within the scope of our interests.”
Kahn declined to comment on reports that Bayern will search the market for a new goalkeeper in the coming year, but he did admit the team needed to weigh its options.
“We’ve lost our goalkeeper before the end of the season,” he added. “It’s terrible because he is one of the best in the world. It’s a very serious loss for the team.
“We believe that the recovery will go well and his return too, but for now, we have to solve the problem of a replacement. This is temporary. Manuel will be back.”
