Todd Boehly, a co-owner of Chelsea, met with Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to discuss a potential transfer, making Chelsea one of the player’s more well-known suitors over the summer.
Boehly was willing to pursue Ronaldo, but Thomas Tuchel, the then-manager of Chelsea, was less enthusiastic. It was decided to give up on the pursuit, and the Blues eventually acquired Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.
However, with Graham Potter now in charge at Stamford Bridge and Ronaldo now a free agent after leaving Manchester United, Chelsea have once more been mentioned as potential suitors.
Boehly hasn’t ruled out going after Ronaldo, whose World Cup performances are being closely watched by the American.
Potter will have significant influence over Chelsea’s transfer strategy, much like Tuchel did, along with Kyle Macauley, the recruitment analyst he brought with him from Brighton. No decision regarding Ronaldo would be made without Potter’s approval.
Despite his team’s struggles in front of goal, Potter is not interested in a move for Ronaldo, according to sources close to the Chelsea manager, and he has distanced himself from signing the veteran striker, who has also been passed over by Newcastle United.
While it is acknowledged at Chelsea that the team needs to score more goals, Potter is not interested in signing Ronaldo and may wait until the summer to bolster his front line, with Christopher Nkunku of RB Leipzig possibly being the first of many additions.
