Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, could have been playing under another manager if the club’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis was successful in his chase.
Luciano Spalletti walked away from the role after leading the Serie A side to their first Scudetto in 33 yearz.
De Laurentiis has now revealed he tried to get Luis Enrique and Thiago Motta as Spalletti’s replacement.
Enrique opted to join Paris Saint-Germain, while Motta refused to take the job.
De Laurentiis said: “I can reveal that I called Luis Enrique in June but… luckily, Luis wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain — look at his results at PSG now!
“We spoke to Thiago Motta in June but he didn’t want to replace Spalletti after his results.”
Rudi Garcia, who eventually replaced Spalletti is now under pressure, following a poor start to their season.
The Partenopei have started the season slowly under the French coach, sitting fifth in the Serie A table after eight games, picking up 14 points from four wins and two draws.
The team have looked decent in the Champions League, beating Braga 2-1 and falling in a close loss to Real Madrid 3-2.
