Manchester United’s former players Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves have agreed on one thing over Marcus Rashford’s red card during Manchester United’s Champions League trip to Copenhagen on Wednesday.
They believe the red card was damaging and should not have happened at all
Owen and Scholes agreed it wasn’t a red “in a million years”, questioning the referee’s “understanding.”
United were two goals up but gave up the lead just minutes after Rashford was sent off in Denmark.
Hargreaves said the England international does not deserve the red card ‘in a million years’ and Scholes said the ref lacks understanding.
Rashford was sent off for a foul on Elias Jelert in the first half after referee Donatas Rumsas reviewed the footage before making the call.
Rasmus Hojlund had put United with a double but the Premier League side quickly capitulated by conceding twice before the break.
Hargreaves and Scholes were on punditry duties at TNT Sports, monitored by KemiFilani.
“Not in a million years. Marcus is just trying to put his foot in front of the ball, he’s not even looking at the defender,” Hargreaves said when asked if the ref’s decision was in order.
“He’s just trying to put his leg up so the defender bumps into him. When you see a still, and this is the first thing the referee sees when he walks over, it looks horrendous.
“But in real time, he’s not trying to foul him. I know it looks poor, but it’s not malicious, it’s not serious foul play. It’s just a foul, it’s just clumsy. It’s not red.
“They’ve got to stop re-reffing these games like that because it’s ruining it.”
