Neymar is now level as the legendary Pele as Brazil’s all-time top scorer, after he scored against Croatia in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
The 30-year-old has now registered 77 goals across 124 games for his country.
Neymar equals Pele’s 77 goals in 92 matches between 1957 and 1971, as five-time champions Brazil look to win their sixth world title in Qatar.
Not only was it an historic goal from Neymar but an extremely memorable one in its own right as he put Brazil 1-0 up against Croatia in extra-time of the World Cup quarter-final on Friday.
He had been below-par for much of the game but burst into life just before half-time in extra-time, playing a one-two with Lucas Paqueta on the edge of the box, before rounding a defender and the goalkeeper and firing home.
It is not the first time Croatia have fallen victim to the great Brazilian at the World Cup, with Neymar scoring twice against them at the 2014 World Cup as the home side won 3-1 in the group stage.
Neymar remains a long way behind the man at the top of the pile in terms of international goals, Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal superstar has netted 118 times for his country, having moved ahead of previous record-holder Ali Daei who scored 109 times for Iran.
Lionel Messi is still hoping to add to his tally during this World Cup, having scored 94 times for Argentina, putting him third on the all-time list.
