When I heard the news this morning, I actually didn’t believe at first but now it has been confirmed…may his soul rest in peace.
Confirming the death, a Uk-based writer who has worked closely with
Achebe over the past decade, but who asked not to be named said“It is death…it is not
something one speaks of flippantly. Call me back in two hours” while another family member confirmed it saying “I have been on the line
with (his son, requested not to be named)”, said his niece who pleaded
anonymity when we spoke to her at 10.35. “And yes it is true, he is
dead. He has been I’ll for a while, and so this was kind of anticipated.
It is still sad.”
Meanwhile, Wole Soyinka is “devastated” by Achebe’s death. In an interview with cool fm, he said “I’m just devastated, i only heard about half an hour ago and i don’t want to say anything yet. I’m just devastated”
