England Women celebrated their 50th anniversary by defeating the world champions 2-1 in their first game back at Wembley since winning the Euros.
The England Women’s team was founded 50 years ago, and the players more than lived up to the occasion during the Lionesses’ friendly match against the world champion USA.
Goals from Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway against the top-ranked team in the world and defending World Cup champions extended manager Sarina Wiegman’s unbeaten streak to 23 games.
The absence of pressure from expectations didn’t dampen the festive mood inside the stadium because the original England women’s team was present and was honoured before the game.
And they received their chance to shine when 76,893 spectators packed a sold-out Wembley to watch the Lionesses for the first time since they won the European Championship trophy.
