Harry Maguire, the captain of Manchester United, reportedly declined the chance to sign with Barcelona this summer.
After the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag, there were rumours that Manchester United would look to sell England international Harry Maguire, who struggled for form throughout the entirety of the previous season.
However, the Dutchman has given his full support to Maguire, confirming the central defender will retain the club’s captaincy for the upcoming season.
The Mirror claims that Maguire has been encouraged by his manager’s demonstration of faith and has instructed his agents to reject any approach from Barcelona, who are reportedly interested in signing the former Leicester defender.
Maguire was mentioned in relation to a potential swap involving Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Leicester City.
Maguire, however, has no desire to transfer to the Nou Camp this summer.
A source told The Mirror: “Some players, especially with some of the criticism flying around, would have been desperate to go if Barcelona came calling.
“But Harry is unmoved and wants to have a successful season with United. When it comes to mental strength, Harry has it in spades.
“As usual he will get down to doing what he does best.”
A close friend added: “Harry has been made the scapegoat for Manchester United’s poor displays last season.
“Some so-called big players had far worse games than him. It seems that someone has to pay the price.
“The other season it was David de Gea who has been magnificent during his time at the club.”
After sitting out United’s 4-0 victory over Liverpool earlier this month, Maguire has participated in the team’s last three preseason games.
