He then went on to score a hat trick for the Copa America champions against European minnows Estonia at El Sadar, the home of CA Osasuna.
Messi scored a hat-trick in the 47th minute and then added two more goals in the 71st and 67th minutes to his ridiculous Argentina tally.
Messi has now scored five goals in a single match for the second time, the first coming in a Champions League thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen in 2012.
He now has 769 career goals for club and country after scoring against Estonia.
Messi may not have had his most productive season with Paris Saint-Germain, scoring just six goals in Ligue One, but he’s been back to his awe-inspiring best with Argentina.
And his teammates adore him. After Argentina’s victory over Italy, almost every player wanted a picture with Messi and the trophy.
As if he were hosting his own meet and greet, the 34-year-old happily obliged for photo after photo.
Messi will turn 35 this month, but his magic hasn’t worn off yet, and he’s looking good for what could be his final World Cup in Qatar.
Argentina has now gone 33 games without defeat under Lionel Scaloni, and Messi has been reborn.
Commenting on his five-goal haul, Scaloni said: “I don’t know what else to say about Messi, it’s very difficult.
“You have no words left to describe him. Everything he generates is unique and it’s a pleasure to have him in this group. I only have words of thanks to him. It’s a pleasure to see him.”
