Manchester United has been given every reason to believe that they can sign Christopher Nkunku this summer.
As Erik ten Hag gets to work, the United squad is likely to undergo a major overhaul this summer. A number of players are expected to leave, including Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata.
They won’t be the last, though, as a report claims that as many as 12 players could leave the club. And it appears that goalkeeper Dean Henderson is next in line, with a move to a Premier League rival looming.
Given the financial constraints at Old Trafford, Ten Hag is likely to prioritize quality over quantity. However, new bodies in midfield are required, and a deal for Frenkie de Jong appears to be nearing completion.
However, he may not be United’s only high-priced new signing this summer, with RB Leipzig’s Nkunku also being linked.
Nkunku was originally a midfielder, but in 2021/22 he was pushed forward to devastating effect. Indeed, he scored 35 goals this season, establishing himself as one of European football’s most wanted men.
And he could be exactly what Manchester United needs. This summer, they will most likely lose Edinson Cavani and possibly Anthony Martial from their forward line.
Nkunku appears to have left the door open for a possible move when speaking for the first time about his future.
‘It’s no secret there are clubs that are interested in me. Yes, it’s flattering. But it’s also flattering to have a club like Leipzig doing everything to keep me,” he told TeleFoot. “Here, we will have to think carefully and make a good decision.
“The World Cup is coming to life and this is a parameter to be taken into account. Like I said, you just have to think it through.”
Nkunku’s profile will be exactly what United is looking for if he signs.
